Adding personality

I’m always scheming and looking for ways to inject a little personality to my designs. The use of illustrations across any platform or product can help create a brand’s character. At times, I believe it can also help guide the user experience, clarify information and engage users.

During my early days of working at RBC, I noticed the lack of illustration resources we had access to. However, it didn’t stop me from exploring different illustration styles to add to our visual language. In my early days of introducing illustrations within mobile, I explored using gradients, minimal details, and muted shades of colours based on RBC’s colour palette. I even tried using confetti once…that idea didn’t go so well when we tested it with users - the feedback being that RBC is considered a serious institution. No to confetti. 🎊

The Journey

Collaborating with brand

Other digital teams were also inspired to create their own illustrations based on mobile’s unofficial style. It was great to see… but it was slowly becoming an inconsistent mess.

Luckily, we had the opportunity to collaborate with RBC’s Brand team to explore different illustration styles that could work in various platforms across print & digital. I contributed to this collaboration by providing examples and feedback through my managers.

Setting guidelines

When brand finalized the illustration style, it was time to think about how we could communicate and share these illustrations with the rest of the digital team. Working with the Design Platform team, I worked on writing illustration guidelines to add to our standards website and I also started the process of setting up a Figma Illustration library for easy access.

As a huge advocate for adding personality to our products with illustrations, it was a fulfilling experience to have been part of the journey of providing illustration resources to our teams at RBC Digital.
